What's a web feed?

A web feed is a special service offered by many websites today and basically speaking, it's a way for you to get news, headlines and other information directly directly to you rather than you actually visiting a website.

You may have seen the little orange buttons that say "RSS," "XML," or feed on some websites. On the Times-News website, you will see a small graphic that is accepted as the Universal Standard for web feeds. This graphic means that certain content has a RSS feed that is provided and there's a lot of those on the Times-News Online

The abbreviation "RSS" actually means "Really Simple Syndication" and by using the "RSS Feed," you can take advantage of the best new benefits on the world wide web and this service is free - the only you need is an RSS Reader.

What's an RSS Reader

To take advantage of Times-News RSS Feed, you'll need a web feed reader, a piece of software that searches for and displays XML feeds

Most RSS Feed readers are free. Some Internet browsers include feed readers and there are plenty of readers on the web including free software from Google, Bloglines and others. You can either download a free reader or subscribe to these online services at no charge.

Why RSS and what you'll experience

Web Feeds are an excellent way to keep track of blogs, news sites and more. Intead of visiting a web site to see the latest updates, your web reader will monitor all of your favorite feeds and display those updates in a simple headline and summary. When you find something interesting, click on the feed and your reader will redirect right to the web site

Web feeds save you time too and they're easy to implement.

How do I start

Look for web feeds on yoru favorite site by looking for the RSS graphic shown above or click any link that says "RSS Feed,"Web Feed" or "XML Feed." In some cases, your Internet browser may do it all or you will be redirected to one of the readers mentioned above

Browse the feeds offered by Times-News Online in the Feed List listed above and enjoy this new service offered by Times-News Online and other web sites
